Mana`olanaNurse of Hope
Through the Mana’olana Award, the Hawaii (Oahu) Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society seeks to recognize one of the many outstanding nurses in Hawaii – one who demonstrates professionalism, community services, and hope in working with individuals with cancer.
Who Qualifies? All registered and licensed practical nurses practicing in the State of Hawaii qualify for this award. Previous recipients of the Mana’olana award are not eligible to be nominated again. Nurses who have been nominated in the past are eligible and are encouraged to apply again.
How is the Mana’olana Chosen? Selection criteria include:
At least 3 years of clinical experience
Demonstration of continuing education and nursing skills
Currently practicing in Oncology Nursing or with oncology patients
Participation in community service
Commitment to Oncology Nursing and quality patient care
How is a Nomination Made? Nurses may apply directly, or may be nominated by former or present patients, families of patients, nursing colleagues, other healthcare professionals, administrators, or physicians. Hospitals, clubs, and other organizations are encouraged to submit nominations.
When are Nominations and Applications Due? Mana’olana nominations must be made by June 5, 2013. Nominees will be asked to fill out a short questionaire and/or submit a resume within a few weeks. The award will be based on the written application and a brief interview with the nominee. Interviews will take place on July 13, 2013. Nominees must be present for the interview in person or via Skype.
What Does the Mana’olana Receive? Serving as Mana’olana is a rich experience for the nurse selected. The experience includes professional recognition and personal growth. In addition, the Mana’olana receives a financial award from the Hawaii (Oahu) Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society. It is hoped that the Mana’olana will use this award to further their knowledge and share this knowlegde with others in the nursing community. All Nominees who complete the nomination process will receive acknowledgement of their excellence.

Red, blue, pink and green, smiles and laughter are just some of the many colors and emotions that will be seen at the annual ONS Oncology on Canvas. Adults, children, loved ones, & staff will be expressing their feelings about the oncology journey through art. Each participant will write a short story about their artwork, as it will be later put on display. Art supplies, food, and drinks will be provided to all.
Oncology on Canvas is looking for ONS volunteers to help the days of the paintings (if you are not artistic, you could help with ‘logistics’) or to set up and take down the art show. If anyone is interested, please call the contact person at one of the four facilities hosting the event. We appreciate any help that can be given and look forward to seeing new and familiar faces. We encourage anyone to volunteer or join us as we continue to celebrate and honor those whose lives were touched by cancer.
